Alleghany County bears a variant spelling derived from the name of the Allegheny Mountains, a range of which passes along the county's western boundary. It was formed from Bath, Botetourt, and Monroe (now in West Virginia) Counties in 1822, and additional parts of Monroe and Bath were added later.
Alleghany County (Va.) Commonwealth Cause against Susan Griffin, 1858 Jul. The record is an indictment for selling wine, rum, brandy, and other ardent spirits for consumption at a private home without a license. Gibson was found guilty by the jury.
