Historical and Biographical Information

The land that would become Dunn Loring consisted of 600 acres purchased by retired Army General William McKee Dunn and his wife Elizabeth Lanier Dunn from L.B. Clarke in June 1886. The land was transferred to the Loring Land and Improvement Company in September 1886 to develop the earliest platted subdivision in Virginia. The company built a railroad station and community house, and land sales for the Town of Dunn Loring were advertised in 1887. The area was home to Camp Russell A. Alger from May to September 1898 as a training center for soldiers during the Spanish-American War.
