America Wood was the daughter of Mary Shelton.
Certificate, dated 3 October 1853, stating that America Wood of Albemarle County, "a woman of color," produced evidence that she was born free. She is noted as the daughter of Mary Shelton, whose mother was born free "previous to 1806."
