John F. and E. G. Caruthers and Company was a general store that conducted business in the town of Lexington, Virginia, during the mid-nineteenth century. It was owned by John F. Caruthers, Edward G. Caruthers, and John Alexander.

The daybook of John F. and E. G. Caruthers and Company was used as evidence in the chancery case, Mary B. Caruthers versus Administrator of John F. Caruthers and others, heard in the Circuit Court of Rockbridge County.

Scope and Content

Daybook, 1842-1853, of John F. and E. G. Caruthers and Company, a general store, that records in chronological order the daily transactions of an unidentified merchant. Information recorded in the daybook includes name of customer, date of transaction, items purchased, quantity of items purchased, cost per item, amount owed, form of payment, and amount paid. Merchandise sold include meat, dry-goods, text books, spices, paper, toiletries, and shoes. Payments made by cash, credit, or barter of items such as hickory wood, wheat, pork, hay, oats, and butter.
