These items came to the Library of Virginia in a shipment of court papers from Grayson County.

Historical Information

Grayson County was named for William Grayson, a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1784 to 1787 and one of the first two United States senators from Virginia. It was formed from Wythe County in 1792, and a part of Patrick County was added in 1810.

Scope and Content

Collection includes Registrars' Reports, 1960-1968, lists of purged names, one folder of Abstracts of Votes for 1963 and an 1878 Voter Registration Record.

Registrars' reports record the voters registered in a particular precinct and magisterial district. These are unbound sheets contained in two boxes; in one the reports are flattened but not arranged; in another they are trifolded and bundled by year. Some districts included are Wilson, Elk Creek, Providence, Old Town, Spring Valley, Stevens Creek, Troutdale, and Barton's Crossroads. Registrars' Reports include date of registration; name and number of registered voter; date of birth; age; occupation; residence; length of residence in state, county, and precinct; whether exempt from poll tax; whether transferred from another precinct, and if so, when and from which precinct; whether naturalized, and if so, date of papers and by what court issued.

The Voter Registration Record was determined to date from 1878, as names and ages of most registrants were compared with the 1880 federal census, accounting for a 2-year age difference in most registrants. Some registrants are denoted as colored, and also correspond with the 1880 federal census. Most registrants list Independence as place of residence, and page "R" includes a page heading designating Independence as the precinct. The volume includes name and number of registerd voter; whether they have been sworn; age; ocupation; residence; length of residence in county and state; whether naturalized, and if so, date of naturalization and by what court issued.
