This item came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer of court papers from Highland County.
Highland County was named for its mountainous terrain. It was formed from Bath and Pendleton Counties in 1847.
Highland County (Va.) Physicians' Register, 1885-1937, contains entries of physicians, surgeons, and dentists who presented their certificate to the county court from the state Boards of Medical or Dental Examiners showing that they are legally permitted to practice medicine in the state. The final three entries also contain information about residence, place of birth, date of birth, and medical school attended. The register information is found on pages 15-33.
Pages 13-14 containes minutes from the Board of Supervisors from 3 May 1884.
The first section of the book (pages 1-10) contains lists of road workers including names, amount of tax owed, and how settled (paid or worked) for 1871-1875. The lists were composed by H. C. Jones, road overseer number 7.
Page 32 of the volume consists of a certification from 1936 that M. K. Simmons had passed the examination before the State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors.
The final three pages of the volume consist of road accounts from Stonewall Township recorded by H. C. Jones for the years 1873-1874.
