This collection came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer of papers under the accession number 51171.

Historical Information

Wythe County was named for George Wythe, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and chancellor of Virginia when Wythe County was formed from Montgomery County by a statute of 1 December 1789. The county court first met on 25 May 1790. Part of Grayson County was added in 1825. The county seat is Wytheville.
