Historical Information

previous hit Accomack  next hit previous hit County  next hit was named for the Accomac Indians, who lived on the eastern Shore at the time of the first English settlement in Virginia. One of the original eight shires established in 1634, Accomac previous hit County  next hit (spelled without a k) became Northampton previous hit County  next hit in 1643. The present country was formed from Northampton about 1663. In 1940 the General Assembly adopted the previous hit county's  next hit present spelling.

One of the original shires recognized in 1634, it became part of Northampton previous hit County  next hit in 1643, reverted to previous hit Accomack  next hit about 1663, merged into Northampton again in October 1670, and reverted to previous hit Accomack  next hit for final time in November 1673. A significant number of loose previous hit records  next hit from the 1700s suffered extreme water and pest damage. Volumes that previous hit record  next hit deeds, previous hit court  next hit orders, and wills exist.

Fiduciary previous hit Records  next hit and Wills, 1678-1862 circa, undated, include miscellaneous previous hit records  next hit filed in a local previous hit court  next hit by trustees, administrators, executors, guardians, and committees that related to the performance of their duties managing a person's estate. These previous hit records  next hit typically include the following; bonds, appraisements, audits, inventories, accounts, estate divisions, settlements, dowery previous hit records  next hit, etc. Information related to enslaved people are commonly found in these previous hit records  next hit.

This collection includes estate inventories, estate divisions, and estate settlements that previous hit record  next hit real and personal property, quantity of property, and value of property owned by the deceased. The documents include names of enslaved persons owned by the deceased. It also inlcudes Inventories, appraisements, estate audits, guardians' bonds, orphan accounts, etc.

The collection includes the will of Thomas Custis recorded in 1721.

The National Society Daughters of the Barons of Runnemede donated to the conservation of these manuscripts.
