Virginia. Land Office. List of some warrants issued for Revolutionary War military service from the Virginia Land Office, 1818. Accession Land Office inventory entry no. 95, State government records collection, The Library of Virginia, Archives Branch, Richmond, VA 23219.
The act which established the previous Land Office next hit passed the General Assembly on 22 June 1779. The register was the head of the Office and was appointed by joint ballot of both houses of the legislature.
These records contain columns giving the name of the soldier, the number of acres to which he was entitled, his rank, his length of service, the date of this certificate, and at times in a column for remarks, the number of the warrant and the name of the warrantee. The list was signed on November 12, 1818, by Thomas Miller, clerk. The soldiers noted on the list include John Walden, William Poe, William Davis, John Davis, John Casy, John Story, William Cardwell, Shadrick Pierson, Berryman Brown, Robert Powell, Thomas Bates, Peter Cockrell, Thomas Sneed, John Brownley, Henry Brown, John Smith, Thomas Smith, Lewis Powers, Thomas Gains, and Charles Nial.
