Acquisition Information

These records came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer of court records from Lynchburg.

Historical Information

Lynchburg, in Campbell County, was named for John Lynch, the owner of the original town site. The city of Lynchburg was established in 1786. It was incorporated as a town in 1805 and as a city in 1852. Lynchburg was enlarged by various annexations from Campbell County in 1814, 1819, 1870, 1900, 1908, 1926 and 1940. The city also annexed land from Bedford County in 1964 and parts of Campbell and Bedford counties were annexed to the city in 1958 and 1975.
