The scrapbook was formerly assigned call number SU 2004-1216, Student Loan Ledger and Alumni Scrapbook, 1926-1950. At the time of processing, the scrapbook had been unbound.
Administrative History
A record of the Harrisonburg Chapter of the Madison College Alumnae Association is found as early as November, 1927, in The Breeze .
The Alumnae Association was formed June 13, 1911, soon after the first 20 women graduated from the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg. By 1955, the association renamed itself the Madison College Alumni Association to reflect the institution's transition to coeducation.
Scope and Contents
The collection is comprised of two meeting minute books, a scrapbook of photographs, and newspaper clippings, and a file of administrative papers that document the activities of the Harrisonburg Chapter of the Madison College Alumni Association (formerly known as the Alumnae Association) from 1945-1964. The scrapbook contains photographs of members of the Heatwole, Suter, Landis, Acker families; Myrtle Virginia Earman and Catherine Shank; and unnamed attendees of Madison College Alumnae meetings. The scrapbook contains the constitution and bylaws of the Harrisonburg Alumnae Chapter of Madison College. It also contains newspaper clippings from the Daily News Record, The Breeze, and other newspapers, covering the resignation of President Samuel P. Duke and the inauguration of President G. Tyler Miller. In 1950, Harrisonburg Chapter Alumnae Association officers consisted of Mrs. James Bryan, president ; Mrs. Hazel Landis, vice- president ; Miss Eddie Williams, treasurer; Miss Catherine Shank, secretary.
The collection contains constitutions labelled "Harrisonburg Chapter of the Madison College Alumnae," as well as the "Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chapter of the Madison College Alumni."
Arrangement
Files are arranged by material type. The scrapbook is unbound and stored in a folder in a flat box.
