Historical Information

The Office of the Chief of Staff is responsible for many activities related to the operation of the University, the policies governing the university, among other things. Some of these responsibilities include developing policies and providing direction for overall institutional data management, making decisions to alter university operations in the absence of one or both the Provost or the Senior Vice President, and permitting employees to utilize appropriate leave during an inclement weather or emergency event. The office was held by Larry Czarda until 2000. J. Thomas Hennessey Jr. filled the office in 2000.

Scope and Content

This collection contains records from the Office of the Chief of Staff. The collection has documents from the 1980s to the 1990s. Some of the materials in the collection include correspondence, notes, press conference information, patent and trademark information, general records for specific projects, executive council meeting notes, among other things. It also includes material pertaining to the Congressional Institute for the Future, Army Research Institute, Hydrogen Transportation Initiative, Federal Relations Congressional Institute, and others. Box 1, Contains documents pertaining to the Metacomputing project and the Federal Relations Congressional Institute. More specifically it contains documents on correspondence, federal information, distributed object computer test bed records, Czarda notes, Arlington Campus involvement in the project, general project records, press conference information, Patent and Trademark Office records, Moran efforts, metanetworking, and JWK International Corporation.

Box 2, Contains documents pertaining to Newberry and Michael Peck. More specifically it has records on the manufacturing extension partnership, the Hydrogen Transportation Initiative, Heritage Development, Foundation documents on George Mason University Issues, Federal Registration Announcements, Congressional Institute for the Future, Army Research Institute, Advisory Committee on Inter-government Relations, Advanced Research Projects Agency, National Institute for Standards and Technology, reviews and updates, technology reinvestment project, among other things.

Box 3-5, Contains documents pertaining to Vint Hill Farms Station. More specifically there are records regarding correspondence, GPAC and Department of Defense reports, Buck Technologies, the budget, media, concept papers, meeting notes, and presentations.

Box 6-7, Contains documents pertaining to NVI action plans, NVCC Medical Center, the NVI Outreach Committee, and NVI Affiliates, records on NCAA certification, middle management documents, legislative committee and roundtable records.

Box 8, Contains documents on fiscal records, Capitol Hill Initiatives, Virginia First Policy Partnership, WRLC Finance Committee, Virtual Research, Town Meetings, among other things.

Box 9-10, Contains the records for the Institute for Educational Transformation as well as documents on grassroots efforts, enrollment management, and the Education Standards Task Force.

Box 11, Contains documents on the Electronic Commerce Resource Center, the Center for Professional Development, 1991-1995 Budget records, Auxiliary Enterprises, the Center for Excellence, and the ATCC Federal Charter Project.

Box 12, Contains documents on NTIA/TIPP, the Northern Virginia Health Center, the Patriot Services Corp., the Prince William Institute, Potomac Knowledge Way, and Frank Wolf.

Box 13, Contains documents on financial planning, 123 Club organizational policies and other records pertaining to the club, meeting notices, activity inventories, NVRT Higher Education Initiative, among other things.

Box 14-15, Contains appointment books from 1986-1993 and other miscellaneous documents as well as USGS contracts, Staff Director for Virginia Business Higher Education Council, Leadership Washington Education Committees, the National Association of Presidential Assistants in Higher Education, and meeting notes.

Box 16-20, Contains documents on LC meeting notes NII Project, economic development records, Leadership Washington Committee, records pertaining to economic development as well as has Larry Czarda's chronological files from 1995, and executive council minutes from 1994 through 1996, president's council working file, and budget and XC retreat documents.
