Biographical History

William H. Whiting, Jr. (class of 1880), born July 24, 1862, was the president of Hampden-Sydney College from 1904-1905 and again from 1908-1909. He was also a Latin professor at the college from 1902 until he retired in 1939. He died on March 28, 1949. He helped to raise money for the college and as a professor at the college he introduced Spanish into the curriculum and served as chair of the Latin department for nearly the entire time he was a professor (Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, 1949).

Scope and Contents

The "William H. Whiting Papers" contain four books. Two are day books, one a treasurer's book, and the fourth a gradebook. Also included in book four are various lists with names and grades.

Beginning of the day book has a few pages documenting expenses for 1884-1885. Throughout the middle of the book, there are educational notes, thoughts, and ideas, including ideas for an exam. The end of the book documents additional expenses but for 1882-1884

Day Volume 2 is not dated, there is a note in the very beginning that says "Journal (see Day Book P. 1)". This volume has several speeches transcribed and one page of expenses, undated.

Abstract

Transcribed on the first page, "Academic Literary Society Treasurer's Book" and beneath that title, members of the society are listed. The book then details bi-weekly dues along with payments and members that still owe. Later on in the book, expenses of teh society are detailed.

Written on the first page, "Session 1880-'81"Page 38 and on indicate the schedule for 1902-1904, grading begins on page 40 with 1902 and goes until the end of the book, ending in 1920.Beginning of the book includes a speech on Greek syntax and parts of the speech are in Greek.
Abstract

The first several pages is a copy of a lecture on Greek Syntax by Prof. Thomas R. Price, University of Virginia. Page 38-39 document the classes and subjects for academic years 1902-1903. Beginning on page 40, grades are listed and caluculated for each student and each class. There are also several loose papers throughout the book that document grading. One of the loose pages is a printed document titled "REsolutions passed by the Faculty and recommended to the Board of Trustees" that was submitted by "The Committee, Wm. H. Whiting, Jr., Chairman."
