Bio/Historical Note

Jean Clifton Walters (nee Foley) was born in 1908 in Kanawha Falls, West Virginia to Elkanah Lee Foley and Annie Farley. She enrolled in the State Teachers College at Harrisonburg in 1925, and graduated in 1929 with a B.S. in Home Economics and a Collegiate Professional certificate. While at the State Teachers College, Foley was involved with the Day Students' Club, YWCA, Athletic Association, and the Frances Sale Club (a Home Economics club). After graduation, she lived for a time in Broward County, Florida. In 1949 she married Paul Richard Walters, and the couple resided in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Foley died in 1999.

Scope and Content

The scrapbook is comprised of photographs and papers from 1939-1940, documenting the experiences of State Normal School alum, Jean Foley. The scrapbook contains images of Harrisonburg, including images of "Turkey Festival" celebrated outside of Wilson Hall on Madison College campus and in a parade down Main Street, Harrisonburg in 1939; May Day festivities on Madison College and downtown Harrisonburg; and photographs of 317 S. Main St., which was her family residence.

The majority of the photographs are travel photographs including of time Foley spent in Florida locations such as Fort Lauderdale, Dania, Poinciana, and Hialeah Park, from 1939-1940. She also travelled to Niagara Falls, Ontario in 1939; New York World's Fair in 1939; Washington D.C. with images of the capitol building and Mt. Vernon; and rural areas of Tennessee. The scrapbook contains an image of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, taken in Ontario, Canada, and a note written in 1985 with biographical information about the Queen.

Loose items include Foley's State Teachers Certificate, issued by the Virginia State Board of Education in 1929; a newspaper clipping of the "Boxwood Tourist Home" on South Main Street in Harrisonburg; and a clipping from the Daily News Record about the Queen Mother from August 3, 1985.
