Biographical/Historical Note

Audrey Louise Hawkins (1927-2016) was born in Charles Town, West Virginia to Roy Benton Hawkins Sr. and Pauline Olive Larrick Hawkins. She attended Madison College and graduated in 1950 with a degree in accounting. While a student, Hawkins was active in the Business Club, YWCA, and Theta Sigma Upsilon, serving as its vice-president her senior year and attending the national convention in the summer of 1949. She also served as the assistant editor of the student handbook. After graduation, Hawkins taught at Ashby Lee Elementary School in Shenandoah County for 19 years.

Hawkins married John William "Bill" Rosenberger on November 26, 1950.

Scope and Contents

The Audrey Hawkins Rosenberger Papers, 1950-1956, document Hawkins' time as a student at Madison College and include photographs, printed ephemera, and a bucket hat.

The collection includes a program from the Margaret Webster Shakespeare Company's production of "Julius Caesar" presented at Madison College on January 10, 1950; the fall 1950 issue of "The Torch," a publication by Theta Sigma Upsilon; Hawkins' Theta Sigma Upsilon bucket hat; three photographs of the 1956 May Day celebrations; and two oversize group photographs, presumably of Theta Sigma Upsilon members. Hawkins is not identified in any of the photographs.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged chronologically into four folders.

Separated Material

A copy of the 1945 Schoolma'am yearbook, a 1949-1950 student handbook, and two issues of The Madison Quarterly (November 1944 and March 1945) were removed from the collection and added to Special Collections holdings.
