Custodial History

The Athletic Association blazer in this collection, which originally belonged to Edith Marian Beckner, was acquired by Nancy Shelton during her tenure with the Longwood University Department of Alumni Relations. It is unknown when the collection was transferred to the Greenwood Library Archives.


Biographical / Historical

Edith Marian Beckner was born in 1931 in Tampa, Florida to Virgil DeWitt Beckner and Edith Turner Beckner. From 1948 to 1952, she attended then-Longwood College, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. While a student at Longwood College, Beckner was involved in many student organizations, including membership in the Monogram Club, the Cotillion Club, Future Teachers of America, Alpha Kappa Gamma, and Sigma Sigma Sigma. She was also on the tennis, senior class volleyball, varsity basketball, and varsity field hockey teams and served as May Day Chair, Social Committee Chair of the Athletic Association, President of Orchesis, and Secretary-Treasurer of the Student Standards Committee. For her accomplishments in athletics as well as extraordinary contributions to the Athletic Association, Beckner was awarded a white blazer, the Athletic Association's highest award, in 1952. In 1954, Beckner married William Morris Riggins, Jr. a physician from Lynchburg, Virginia. In 1977, Edith Marian Beckner Riggins earned her MA in Education from Lynchburg College. In 1997, Riggins retired from the Campbell County Public School system where she taught biology and served as the girls tennis coach at Brookville High School.
