Custodial History
The diplomas in this collection, awarded to Virginia Elizabeth Gates in 1918 and 1938, were acquired by Nancy Shelton during her tenure with Longwood University's Department of Alumni Relations. It is unknown when the collection was transferred to the Greenwood Library Archives.
Biographical / Historical
Virginia Elizabeth Gates was born in Rice, Virginia in 1894 to William Beverly and Elizabeth Woodson Gates. In 1914, she enrolled in then-State Normal School for Women, graduating with her diploma in 1918. After graduation, Gates taught in South Boston, Virginia and in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. She returned to Farmville in the late-1930s and earned her bachelor's degree from State Teachers College in 1938. Virginia Elizabeth Gates continued to teach in Roanoke Rapids until her retirement in the mid-1960s.
