Custodial History
The items in this collection, which relate to Emily Winifred Johnson during her time as a student at State Female Normal School, were acquired by Nancy Shelton during her tenure with the Longwood University Department of Alumni Relations. It is unknown when the collection was transferred to the Greenwood Library Archives.
Biographical / Historical
Emily Winifred Johnson was born in 1890 in Marion, North Carolina to George Thomas and Catherine Ann Elizabeth Powell Johnson. In 1909, she enrolled in State Female Normal School, and earned her diploma in 1911. After graduation, Johnson taught for several years at State Teachers College in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She later earned a master's degree from Columbia University and in the later 1930s served as Supervisor of Elementary Education in Arlington, Virginia. In the 1950s, Emily Winifred Johnson worked as a public health analyst and later as a research editor for the federal government. For many years, Johnson served as President of the Washington, D.C. Chapter of Longwood Alumni.

The items in this collection, which date from 1910 to 1915, consist of ephemeral materials collected by Emily Winifred Johnson while a student at State Female Normal School.
