Custodial History

The items in this collection all relate to Henrietta Christine MacKan during her time as a student at State Female Normal School and her later teaching career. These materials were acquired by Nancy Shelton during her tenure with the Longwood University Department of Alumni Relations. It is unknown when this collection was transferred to the Greenwood Library Archives.


Biographical / Historical

Henrietta Christine MacKan was born in 1986 in Portsmouth, Virginia to Robert Silas and Henrietta Reed MacKan. In 1913, MacKan enrolled in [then] State Female Normal School in Farmville, Virginia, and earned her diploma in 1915. While a student at State Female Normal School, she was a member of the Dramatic Club, the Tennis Club, the basketball team, D.I.R.K., Cotillion Club, and the Portsmouth Club. Additionally, she served on the Student Committee, as President of the Argus Literary Society, and Business Manager of The Focus (student literary magazine). After graduation, Henrietta Christine MacKan taught for many years in the Norfolk, Virginia public school system.

Scope and Contents

This collection, which dates from 1914 to 1935, consists of an honor roll notification, school transcripts, and teacher certifications.
