Custodial History

The letter in this collection was sent to members of Chi, via Dr. Nancy Andrews, in April 1969. The letter was donated to the Longwood University Department of Alumni Relations by Virginia Washington Sykora, class of 1969 and member of Chi, in January 2011. It is unknown when this collection was transferred to the Greenwood Library Archives.


Biographical / Historical

Raymond "Charlie Hop" French was a professor of Chemistry at Longwood from 1929 until his retirement in 1964. For many years during his tenure, French was the faculty sponsor of Chi.

Chi is a secret society founded at then-State Female Normal School in 1900 and is the oldest service organization at Longwood. The purpose of Chi is to promote and maintain a spirit of cooperation among students during every phase of college life.

Scope and Contents

This letter, dated April 1969, was written by Raymond French, to members of Chi in April 1969. In the letter, he thanks the members of Chi for their recent correspondence and gifts, reminisces about his time at Longwood, and keeps them up-to-date about his life since retirement.
