Custodial History

This ashtray was donated to the Longwood University Department of Alumni Relations in the early 1990s, by Kate Matherly Vargas. It is unknown when this collection was transferred to the Greenwood Library Archives.

Biographical / Historical

The State Normal School for Women was the fourth iteration of the school that would eventually become Longwood University. Encompassing the years 1914 to 1924, this period was one in which the curriculum was expanded and both faculty and enrollment increased exponentially.

As well, several new buildings, all in the Jeffersonian brick style, were added to campus during these years.
