Biographical Note

Phyllis Leffler is a professor emerita at the University of Virginia with a focus on oral history, public history, and the history of the University of Virginia. Julian Bond was a prominent figure in the civil rights movement, helping to found the Southern Poverty Law Center in 1971. Bond also served in the Georgia House of Representatives, was the chairman of the NAACP from 1998 to 2010, and was a professor at the University of Virginia. Explorations in Black Leadership was a joint project co-directed by Leffler and Bond within the School of Arts and Sciences, conducted between 200 and 2015. The project consisted of oral histories of leaders from the Black community, from all areas including law, education, religion, public service, the arts, and business. It examined how leaders are nurtured and how historical circumstances shape them.
