The VCU School of Pharmacy in 1977 established the local fraternity Sigma Tau Alpha to encourage more student participation in group activities. The purpose of the fraternity, according to its constitution, was to help its members develop professional character and leadership abilities and to create mutually beneficial relationships within the fraternity, school, and community. Fraternity eligibility required enrollment in the VCU School of Pharmacy, at least a 2.0 GPA after the first semester, and no affiliation with another professional fraternity.
Fraternity members participated in service projects and fund raising activities. They raised money through bake sales, aluminum can recycling, car washes, and cookbook sales. Their social outings included dinner theater outings and ski trips. They participated in community services projects such as The Bainbridge Community Center Carnival, and donated money to the Children's Oncology Services of Virginia. Despite the active schedule, the fraternity was short lived and there is no indication within the materials as to why it ceased.
This collection includes records and documentation from its inception in 1977 to its closure in 1980 and provides insight into the social aspects of student life. Materials include the fraternity's preamble and constitution, bylaws, a scrapbook with photographs, meeting minutes, ledger book, financial records, rush and initiation information, contact information, and a master copy of their fundraiser cookbook. The minutes provide a detailed account of the materials discussed during each executive council meeting. The scrapbook documents all of the social gatherings and the initiation of new members.
This collection is arranged alphabetically by folder title and the contents within the folders are arranged chronologically where applicable.
