Biographical / Historical

George E. Hoffer is a professor of economics in VCU's School of Business. He has focused his research in the last 30 years on the automobile industry. He came to VCU in 1970. He received a B.S. from the University of Richmond, an M.S. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. Hoffer has authored or co-authored approximately 60 academic articles on the economics of the auto industry. He has also conducted research for the Federal Trade Commission, the Attorney General's Office of Virginia, and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains domestic and foreign automobile catalogs from most of the major automobile manufacturing companies from the years 1960 through today. The collection also contains: issues of Consumer Reports magazine focusing on automobiles from 1987 through 2002; car buying guides, 1974-2002; gas mileage guides, 1997 - 2002; correspondence, mainly from car manufacturers; and newspaper clippings.

Arrangement

Collection is arranged alphabetically by subject and chronologically therein. Series I is made up of domestic (American) automobile catalogs, Series II contains foreign automobile catalogs -- all of which are arranged chronologically. Series III is composed of issues of Consumer Reports, correspondence and miscellaneous material, including newspaper clippings.
