Herbert E. Valentine (1841-1917) served in Company F, 23rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War, and he authored Story of Co. F, 23rd Massachusetts Volunteers in the War for the Union 1861-1865 (W.H. Clarke & Co., Boston, 1896). He was a photographer, who enlisted while living in Salem, Massachusetts. He is buried in Springfield Cemetery, Springfield, Massachusetts.

The Herbert E. Valentine Scrapbook is a 50-page scrapbook compiled by Valentine, who served in Company F, 23rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. Scrapbook comprises a series of newspaper clippings from the Salem [Massachusetts] News , written in 1911-1912 by Valentine, giving details of his regiment's war activities. It also includes photographs, many taken in New Berne, North Carolina, by Valentine in 1908, during dedication of a monument to members of his regiment. The scrapbook also has Valentine's 39 ink wash scenes sketched during the war years.
