The Raleigh Coal & Coke Company Rail Spur Drawing was purchased by Special Collections in 2009. The document had been part of a larger group of railroad-related materials compiled by a collector, then sold to a dealer (see "separated material" section).
The processing and description of the Raleigh Coal & Coke Company Rail Spur Drawing commenced and was completed in March 2009.
The Raleigh Coal & Coke Company operated in West Virginia during the early twentieth century, establishing a mine and camp at Raleigh (Raleigh County) in 1909. The company marketed its coal under the trade name "Black Knight Coal." Raleigh Coal & Coke ceased operations in 1950.
This collection consists of an as-built drawing for a railroad spur line to the Raleigh Coal & Coke Company's Number 3 Mine. The spur was located on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway's Piney Creek Branch (New River District). The drawing (number X-1614) contains the original plan, executed in 1918, as well as the as-built revisions of 1920.
The Raleigh Coal & Coke Company Rail Spur Drawing was acquired as part of a larger collection of railway-related material that had been compiled by a collector, then sold to a dealer. In the course of processing, the drawing was removed to a separate collection.
