Marcus Peck was born June 6, 1839, in Sand Lake, New York. On September 5, 1862, Peck enlisted in the Union Army at Sand Lake as a Private during the American Civil War. A month later he was mustered into "H" Co., New York 169th Infantry. Just over five months into his service, on March 21, 1863, he died in Washington, D. C. Marcus Peck is buried at Sand Lake Union Cemetary in Sand Lake.

The Marcus Peck letter was mailed from Camp Abercrombie on November 15-16, 1862, from Peck, a Private in the Union Army during the American Civil War, to his sister. Peck begins his letter describing the living quarters that he and a few other soldiers had built. He goes on to describe his daily activities, as well as what was happening around him while he was in Camp Abercrombie.
