Abstract
American flag with thirty-five stars, symbolizing the addition of West Virginia to the Union on June 20, 1863. This flag was
made in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, probably in July 1863. It came to be owned by Lt. George W. Ernest, who served in the
15th Pennsylvania Calvary during the Civil War and was in Shepherdstown in July 1863 following the battle of Gettysburg. Flags
with thirty-five stars were only made between June 1863 and October 1864, when Nevada entered the Union as the thirty-sixth
state. This flag is 4 1/4 ft. x 6 1/2 ft. and is in excellent condition.
