Abstract
Rear Admiral French Ensor Chadwick (1844-1919) of Morgantown, West Virginia, was a U.S. Navy officer involved in the naval reform movement and naval education in the late nineteenth century. Chadwick served in the navy from 1864 to 1906. Collection contains Chadwick's commissioned officer's dress blue uniform, including the pants, jacket, epaulets, two cocked hats, and sword.

Biographical / Historical

French Ensor Chadwick was born in Morgantown, West Virginia, in 1844. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy from 1861 to 1864 and served during the last year of the Civil War. He served in various roles in the navy for more than forty years. He also served as president of the Naval War College from 1900 to 1903. Chadwick retired from military service in 1906. Rear Admiral French E. Chadwick died of pneumonia in January 1919.
