Abstract
Letters, newspaper clippings, and a brief history of the Civilian Defense Organization of Nicholas County, West Virginia, from 1942 to 1945 describe county news related to World War II. Eight letters from different soldiers describe basic training, living conditions in France, seeing dead Japanese soldiers in the Philippines, weather, and family news. Newspaper clippings from the Nicholas Chronicle cover many topics relate to the war. Two letters, outlines, and a history of civilian defense in Nicholas County, written by O.C. Lewis, document West Virginia's efforts to create a narrative history of civil defense by county. Gladys Vaughan served as the war records collector for Nicholas County, West Virginia, during World War II. These materials appear to have been compiled by Vaughan.
