Scope and Contents

Program and lecture notes of artist Robert Lepper for a presentation he gave entitled "Machine Age Art" in connection with his mural in White Hall at West Virginia University (WVU). The presentation was given in the main lecture room in White Hall where Lepper's mural is located. The artist spoke of the technical and thematic problems involved with painting the mural, and how he chose its final subject. Art critic Dr. Richard Guy Wilson praised Lepper's painting of the energy industry in West Virginia, comparing it favorably to highly acclaimed works of the same period such as Diego Rivera's Ford murals in Detroit, and Jose Clemente Orozco's Dartmoth Library murals. The event was cosponsored by the WVU Public History program and the Curator of Art, Urban Couch.

Addendum of 2011/02/22 includes photographs and negatives by photographer Mark Portland of Pittsburgh of mural in White Hall by Robert Lepper. These photos were shot for the movie Spider-Man 2 which appeared in 2004. (2003; 2 1/2 in.)
