The spill occurred on 9 January 2014, involved the release of a chemical cleaning foam called crude MCHM into the Elk River, and caused roughly 30,000 West Virginians in nine counties to be without access to potable water. Includes article entitled "I'm from West Virginia and I've Got Something to Say About the Chemical Spill" by Eric Waggoner, published in the Huffington Post, 14 January 2014; article entitled "A Century of Controversy, Accidents in West Virginia's Chemical Valley in Lead-up to Spill" by Laura Parker, published in National Geographic, 16 January 2014; and article entitled "Chemical Valley" by Evan Osnos, published in the New Yorker, 7 April 2014.
