Biographical / Historical
Dr. Nyles Charon has been a professor at WVU since at least the early 1980s. As of 2024, he serves as Professor Emeritus in the School of Medicine in Microbiology, Immunobiology and Cell Biology. He has won several teaching awards at WVU including the MacLachlan Teaching Award (1981-1982), Outstanding Teacher Award (1982), and School of Medicine Dean's Excellence Award in Research (2006).
His late wife Regina Charon was a pioneering female lawyer and judge in West Virginia. She was also a founding member of the Council for Women's Concerns at WVU, which paved the way for the Women's and Gender Studies program at the university. Scope and Contents
Memoranda, correspondence, and an article related to recombinant DNA experiments that took place at West Virginia University. The project was called "Cloning of genes from Leptospira interrogans serovars patoc and illini into E scherichia coli K-12." The Memorandum of Understanding includes the experiment participants, goals, methods for cloning, location, and procedures. The article is believed to be the first recombinant DNA publication from WVU: "Cloning of a gene required for tryptophan biosynthesis from Leptospira biflexa serovar patoc into Escherichia coli " by David B. Yelton and Nyles W. Charon.
