Abstract
Typescript copy of "Man on Horseback: Major Thomas Boyd Davis and Martial Law in West Virginia," a manuscript written by Merle T. Cole in June 1980. This full-length study examines the role of Thomas Boyd Davis (1878-1935) during two periods of martial law in West Virginia in the early twentieth century. Topics include mine wars at Cabin-Paint Creek, 1912-1913; the West Virginia National Guard, 1917-1918; the labor movement, Matewan, 1920-1921; and martial law in Mingo County in the early 1920s.
