Biographical/Historical Information

Thomas H. Clagett was born about 1802 in Loudoun County, Virginia. He became a doctor and a prosperous farmer. Clagett served as treasurer for St. James Church in Leesburg, Virginia. He and his wife, Lalla Clagett (1820-1888), had at least 2 children. Clagett died in Loudoun County on 18 October 1870.

Scope and Content Information

Correspondence, 1840-1842, of Dr. Thomas H. Clagett (1802-1870) of Loudoun County, Virginia, including letters from Nelson Ryon (d. 1849) of Prince George's County, Maryland, concerning a plantation that Ryon managed for Clagett, providing information on the farm's tobacco crops, livestock and slaves. The collection also contains letters from Thomas M. Locke of Baltimore, Maryland, who served as Clagett's agent for the sale of tobacco and wheat.
