Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church. 130th Anniversary Committee (Richmond, Va.). Records, 1997. Accession 35664, Church records collection, The Library of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia.
Gift of Benjamin C. Ross, Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church, 14 West Duval Street, Richmond, Virginia, 23220, 20 January 1998.
The Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church was organized on 3 September 1867 by Reverend John Jasper in a Confederate horse stable on Brown's Island. This structure soon proved too small, and throughout 1868, the congregation held services in various places. In the summer of 1869, the church moved to a small brick building on the corner of St. John and Duval Streets. The core of the present church building was built in 1887. It was remodeled and extended in 1925.
A compilation of material from the 130th Anniversary Committee of the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia, including a program, a copy of "De Sun Do Move -- The Celebrated Sermon of John J. Jasper," and assorted pamphlets and copies of photographs. The program includes a brief church history, copies of congratulatory letters on the church's 130th anniversary, and a list of members of the 130th anniversary committee. Also includes a copy of a photograph of the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church historical quilt.
