Acquisition Information

On deposit by William and Mary College, 1 July 1955.

Consists chiefly of correspondence of Nathaniel V. Watkins with his brother and sister, Richard H. Watkins and Pattie (Watkins) Scott, Prince Edward Court House, Virginia, and with his wife Nancy Daniel Watkins, relating to his Civil War experiences with the Virginia Heavy Artillery, Company H, which became part of the 34th Virginia Infantry Regiment. His union was stationed at Gloucester Point, near Richmond, and near Petersburg. His letters concern camp life, religion among soldiers, his work as a clerk for courts-martial; and he gave directions to his wife concerning the management of their farm in Granville County, North Carolina. Some letters relate to the conditions of slaves during the Civil War and the emancipation.
