Biographical/Historical Information

Drewry Bell was a blacksmith and resident of Amherst County, Virginia. He married 1) Rachel Lee on 10 January 1789. She died on 25 May 1801. He married 2) Catherine T. Slaughter on 21 January 1802. She died on 19 February 1832. Drury Bell died on 27 February 1837.

Scope and Content Information

Ledger, 1793-1820 and 1853, of Drury Bell (d. 1837) of Amherst County, Virginia. Includes customer account information for blacksmith and leather work performed by Bell, as well as articles purchased from him, including shoes, leather goods, and general merchandise. Also includes a register of the Bell family, including births, marriages, and deaths, as well as slave births, covering the years 1789 to 1837. (This family register is also available as Accession 39165). At the end of the ledger is information, dated 1853, concerning the estate of John Shelton, Sr., including an appraisement of his estate and slaves, account of sales, list of bonds and accounts for the sale of his slaves, and a list of legatees.
