Biographical/Historical Information

Richard Corbin Byrd (b. 1837) of Gloucester County, Virginia married Anne Gordon Marshall in 1860. They had six children. Richard C. Byrd was a captain in the 26th Virginia Infantry, Company E and F, C.S.A.

Scope and Content Information

Includes accounts of plantation wheat harvests at the Byrd family's White Hall Farm in Gloucester County, Virginia along with an itemized list of the farm's credit and debt balances. Also contains lists of slaves' owned by the Byrd family in 1859 noting first name, age, progeny, date they commenced work at the plantation, and in some cases surname. Slave records have been described separately in Acc. 37231. The end pages of the ledger are labelled "presented to the Franklinian Society by Jacob Nollner. William and Mary College, 1820." Both the cover and the end pages also contain numerous signatures and on the back cover are two drawings of soldiers. The ledger appears to have been the property of both Samuel Powell Byrd and his son Richard Corbin Byrd (1837-) as both men's signatures are present.
