Biographical Information

George Warren Chappelear was born 23 August 1889 in Fauquier County, Virginia. After graduating from Upperville High School, Chappelear attended the University of Richmond. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1912 with a degree in agronomy and received his MS from VPI in 1913. After doing post-graduate work at the University of Chicago, Chappelear taught at mathematics, biology, and agriculture at Miller School in Albemarle County, Virginia. In 1918, he became a professor of biology at Madison College (now James Madison University) where he taught until his death. Chappelear was active in several scientific organizations and was also a historian of Rockingham County and the Shenandoah Valley. He married Nannie Binford Chappelear 7 June 1917, and they had 2 daughters. Chappelear died in Harrisonburg, Virginia, 4 October 1944.

Rockingham County notes, n.d., collected by George Warren Chappelear (1889-1944) of Rockingham County, Virginia, consisting mainly of transcripts and abstracts of documents relating to the history of Rockingham County and Harrisonburg, Virginia. Collection contains deeds, letters, notes, wills, bills of sale, land grants, agreements, Bible records, land grants, slave emancipation, and articles. Some of the families mentioned in this collection are Armentrout, Cromer, Shultz, Lang, Gordon, and Miller. Folder 1 does not have pp. 16-17; folder 3 does not have p. 18. There is a name index included in this collection.
