Patrick Henry was born 29 May 1736 in Hanover County, Virginia, to John and Sara Winston Henry. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress and Virginia Convention, governor of Virginia 1776-1779, 1784- 1786, and delegate to the Virginia Constitution Ratification Convention, 1788. He was married to Sarah Shelton and Dorothea Dandridge (1757-1831). He died 6 June 1799 at his home on Red Hill Plantation, Charlotte County, Virginia.

Scope and Content

Letters, 1797-1799, of Patrick Henry (1736-1799) of Charlotte County, Virginia, consisting of five letters from Patrick Henry to James Townes, Jr., (d. 1810) of Amelia County, Virginia, concerning the purchase of land, slaves, and livestock at the Seven Islands in Fluvanna County, Virginia. The other two letters are written by his wife, Dorothea Henry (1757-1831), as executrix of his estate, to Townes and to William Marshall Booker (d. 1802) also of Amelia County concerning the purchase and hiring of slaves, as well as financial matters relating to the estate.
