Acquisition Information

This item came in shipments of court papers from Page County.

William H. Miller served in the Massanutten Rangers, Company D, 7th Virginia Calvary. The two militia companies he writes about were: Page Grays, Company H, 33rd Virginia Infantry led by Captain William D. Rippetoe and Page Volunteers, Company K, 10th Virginia Infantry led by William Townsend Young.

Scope and Content Information

Letter dated July 23, 1861, written by William H. Miller to Mrs. W.G. Young concerning casualties suffered by two Page County militia companies during the First Battle of Bull Run. He provides the names of the captains of the two companies, Rippetoe and Young, and the names of several men from each company who were wounded or killed. Miller also remarks on the high morale of the Confederate troops following their victory.
