P. L. Kemble and Company was a general store owned by Philander Lee Kemble that conducted business in Brownsburg, Rockbridge County, Virginia during the mid-nineteenth century.
The volumes of P. L. Kemble and Company consist of a daybook and an account book.
Daybook records transactions as they occurred on a daily basis from October 1866 - June 1867. Information found in each entry includes name of customer, items purchased, quantity of items purchased, cost per item, amount owed, and amount paid. Merchandise sold include clothing, shoes, spices, dry-goods, spoons, knives, paper, and matches. Payments made by cash, credit, labor, and barter of items such as corn, chickens, pork, eggs, and butter.
Account book, 1866-1868, records the individual accounts of customers. Each account lists transactions in chronological order, items purchased, quantity of items purchased, cost per item, amount owed, and amount paid. The volume includes an index that lists in alphabetical order the names of customers and the page numbers where their accounts can be found.
