This item came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer of court papers from Roanoke County.
Roanoke County was formed from Botetourt County in 1838. In 1849, it was enlarged by adding a portion of what was then Montgomery County.
This census is believed to be to have been performed at the behest of the Federal Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands.
The Roanoke County (Va.) Census Returns of Colored Population, 1865 ca., for the localities of Salem and Cave Springs. The census records the color (black, mulatto, quadroons, octoroons), sex, age, status on Jan. 1st 1863 (slave or free), former owner, resident or non-resident (with former place of residence), occupation, intelligence (literacy), ability or disability to support themselves, estimate of property value and other remarks.
