Elizabeth City County was formed in 1634 (original shire) now extinct, incorporated into the City of Hampton in 1952.
The will books of Elizabeth City County (Va.) in this collection were created by the County Court.
Recognized in 1634 as an original shire. Records were burned and/or destroyed during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Additional records were burned on April 3, 1865, in Richmond, where they had been moved for safekeeping during the Civil War. A few pre–Civil War volumes such as deed books, will books, and order books exist.
Will books, 1701-1904, of Elizabeth City County Court. The will books includes the name of testator, list of heirs and year the wills were proven in court and probate records such as inventories and appraisements. There is also an index to will book, 1701-1859. Part 1 does not have an index.
