Fredericksburg was established in 1728. Incorporated as a town in 1782, it was incorporated as a city in 1879 and is one of the independent cities of Virginia.
Fredericksburg (Va.) Certificates and Registry of Free Negroes in the City of Fredericksburg, 1790-1862, consists of wills, deeds of manumission and emancipation, discharges from servitude, affidavits and certificates of status as a free negro, registrations as free negroes, and a partial register of free negroes with registrations dated 1850-1862 circa. Some of the very first items in the collection are undated. A typed compiled index completed in 1977 preceeds the documents.
