These items came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer of court papers from Albemarle County.

Historical Information

Albemarle County was named for William Anne Keppel, second earl of Albemarle and governor of the Virginia colony from 1737 to 1754. It was formed from Goochland County in 1744, and part of Louisa County and certain islands in the Fluvanna River, now called the James, were added later.

Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) served in the military, as private secretary to President Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), commander of the Lewis and Clark expedition, and as governor of Louisiana territory. He died 17 October 1809 in Tennessee either by suicide or murder.

Scope and Content

Albemarle County (Va.) affidavits pertaining to the military enlistment of Thomas Baber by Meriwether Lewis, 1798 Sep. The collection contains the affidavit of Susannah Baber stating that her son, age 17, was restrained of his liberty in the town of Charlottesville by Lewis under the pretense of his having enlisted as a soldier in the armies of the United States; a summons for Lewis to present Thomas Baber in court, and the affidavit of Lewis stating he enlisted Baber in the U.S. army.
