Biographical Information

George Felix Allen was born March 8, 1952 in Whittier, California to famed NFL football coach George H. Allen and his wife Henrietta (Lumbroso) Allen. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1971 and the University of Virginia School of Law in 1977. Allen served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1982-1991 and served a short term in the U.S. House of Delegates in the early 1990s. In November 1993, Allen beat Attorney General Mary Sue Terry to become Governor. Governor Allen served until January 1998 and was succeeded by Governor James S. Gilmore. Governor Allen has been married to Susan (Brown) Allen since 1986 and they have three children, Forrest, Tyler, and Brooke. The family resides in Mount Vernon, Virginia.

Scope and Content

Contains news summaries, photographs, press releases, publications, proclamations and certificates of recognition, speeches, and other files related to the activities of Governor George F. Allen's Press Office. The Press Office was responsible for keeping the media and the general public informed of Governor Allen's appearances, speech writing, issuing proclamations, and maintaining the Governor's photograph collection. The Press Office also collected information related to the Governor, such as newspaper clippings and magazine articles.

Series I. News Summaries , 1994-1998 .
Boxes 1-25
Extent: 25 cubic feet.

(Accession 35715). Contains packets of news clippings related to Governor Allen and his administration. In many cases, the clippings are indexed according to subject matter. These packets were compiled by the Press Office. Also included are packets of news clippings compiled by the Virginia Press Service (VPS Clips) that are also indexed by subject. VPS Clips are found at the end of each month. Researchers should note that overlap may or may not exist between the two sets of clippings.

Series II. Photographs , 1993-1998 .
Boxes 26-37
Extent: 5.4 cubic feet.

(Accessions 35863 and 43396). Contains photographs that document the events of activities of the Allen Administration. Also included are photographs of Election Night 1993 and the inauguration of Governor Jim Gilmore in January 1998. The photographs document Governor Allen's inauguration, press conferences, announcements, his RV tours of the state, trade missions to various countries, groundbreakings, ribbon cuttings, school visits and graduations, swearings-in, agency head meetings, award ceremonies, and the annual state Christmas tree lighting and Executive Mansion open house. Also included are photographs of certain activities of the first family and First Lady Susan Allen. The photographs are numbered, and most photographs were taken by Richard L. Piermarini. Folder lists containing the identification numbers can be found inside each box. An asterisk after the folder title indicates that the name of the photographer was not marked on the original envelope. The numbers and asterisks are not included in the folder list below. Included at the end of Box 37 is a folder of miscellaneous negatives and contact sheets of Allen administration photographs taken by Pierre Courtois, photographer of the Library of Virginia.

Series III. Press Releases , 1993-1998 .
Boxes 38-40
Extent: 2.35 cubic feet.

(Accession 35746). Contains press releases issued by the Press Office of Governor George Allen. Also included are releases issued by Governor-elect Allen's Transition Office before his inauguration. The releases announce appointments, business expansions, swearings-in, grant funding, media advisories for public appearances, trade missions, and select activities of First Lady Susan Allen. In limited cases, remarks and speech transcripts are also included with the press releases.

Series IV. Proclamations and Certificates of Recognition , 1994-1998 .
Boxes 40-43.
Extent: 3.3 cubic feet.

(Accession 35716). Contains copies of proclamations and certificates of recogition issued and signed by Governor George Allen. These documents recognize citizens, programs, anniversaries, events, and are used designate days, weeks, and months for special observance in the Commonwealth. Some files also include background documentation including correspondence, clippings, reference material, and press releases.

The proclamations and certificates of recognition are filed together and arranged chronologically by month. Undated documents can be found in the first folder for each year.

(Accession 35746). Contains publications collected by the Press Office that feature articles written by or about Governor George Allen. Also included are transcripts of his State of the Commonwealth addresses for 1996 and 1997, and undated brochures about the Executive Mansion and the Capitol's Third Floor Portrait Gallery.

Box 44.
Extent: .4 cubic feet.

(Accession 35863). Contains prepared remarks for speeches made by Governor George Allen. The speeches include those delivered at college graduations, conferences and forums, ribbon-cuttings, public announcements, and to the General Assembly. Also included are the texts for Governor Allen's State of the Commonwealth addresses.

The speeches are arranged chronologically by the month in which they were delivered.

Series VII. Miscellaneous Press Office Files , 1994-1997 .
Box 44.
Extent: .15 cubic feet.

(Accessions 35430 and 35863). Contains three files related to the activities of the Press Office during the Allen administration. The first folder contains inaugural briefing materials distributed to the media. The material includes time schedules and fact sheets for the inaugural events and is part of accession 35430. The second folder contains visitor registration logs that contain names, addresses, and comments left by visitors to the Governor's Office for the years 1996-1997. The final folder contains print-outs of Governor Allen's Web site as it was in November 1997. The print-outs include an organizational chart, biographical information, and descriptions of state agencies and cabinet secretaries. The visitor logs and Web site files are part of accession 35863.

The miscellaneous files are arranged alphabetically by folder title.
