Acquisition Information

These items came to the Library of Virginia in a shipment of court papers from Grayson County under an undated accession.

Processing Information

Prior to 2024, the various business records in this collection were originally described as individual records, but they have been consolidated into one large business record for the locality.

The business records of the Bank of Troutdale Inc, were processed by Louise Jones in 2012. All other series were processed by Greg Crawford in 2003.

Historical Information

Context for Record Type: Business Records, both volumes and loose records, are in some cases transferred to the Library of Virginia as components of court record transfers. These business records in some cases were simply stored in the local court building for safe keeping by business owners. In other cases, business records (particularly ledgers, account books, etc.) may have been filed in a court case as an exhibit. These business record exhibits appeared both in chancery causes and in judgments, these records serving as exhibits for business dissolution cases, debut suits, and contract disputes.

Locality History: Grayson County was named for William Grayson, a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1784 to 1787 and one of the first two United States senators from Virginia. It was formed from Wythe County in 1792, and a part of Patrick County was added in 1810. The county seat is Independence.

Grayson County (Va.) Business Records, 1828-1935, is comprised of various records created by individuals and companies in pursuit of documenting business activities in and around Grayson County (Va.). Represented records consists of a ledger and daybooks.

Series I: Business Records of the Bank of Troutdale Incorporated, 1913-1922

Historical Information: The Bank of Troutdale was incorporated in 1906, the same year as the town of Troutdale was established. By 1920,the bank provided loans to multiple furniture factories with the expectation of reypayment. After large orders of goods were cancelled due to a chain of unforeseen global events leaving the factories unable to repay their debts, a run on the bank forced it to close in March 1921.

Scope and Content: The business records of the Bank of Troutdale Incorparted consists of a ledger. The ledger detailed transaction histories of its customers.

Series II: Business Records of John W. Wiley and Company, 1874-1875

Historical Information: John W. Wiley and Company was a general store that conducted business in Grayson County, Virginia, during the mid-nineteenth century.

Scope and Content: The business records of John W. Wiley and Company consists of a daybook. The daybook recorded transactions in chronological order on a daily basis. Information found in entries includes name of customer, date of transaction, items purchased, quantity of items purchased, cost of each item, form of payment, and total amount owed and paid. Merchandise sold includes lamps, spices, nails, violin strings, dry goods, clothing, lard, and shoes. Payments made by cash, check, credit, or barter of items such as flour, butter, and produce.

The volume is missing the first 118 pages. At the back of volume is a list of goods turned over to D.C. Mallory by John W. Wiley and Company on Marh 31, 1875. Information found includes quantity of item, name of item, cost of each item, and total amount.

Series III: Business Records of an Unidentified General Store, 1828-1835

Scope and Content: The business records of the unidentified general store consists of a daybook. The volume recorded transactions in chronological order on a daily basis. Information found in entries includes name of customer, date of transaction, items purchased, quantity of items purchased, cost of each item, form of payment, and total amount owed and paid. Merchandise sold includes tobacco, leather, spices, spelling books, dry goods, hats, knives, and razors. Payments made by cash, credit, or barter of items such as cheese, bacon, eggs, and rye. The first four pages of volume list names of individuals who paid claims owed the store in 1828.
