Acquisition Information

These records came to the Library of Virginia in transfers of court papers from Shenandoah County in 2005.

Processing Information

Prior to 2024, the various business records in this collection were originally described as individual records, but they have been consolidated into one large business record for the locality.

The records in this collection were processed at different times in 2005 by Gregory Crawford. Efforts have been taken to identify chancery causes related to these business records as some of these records were used as evidence in court proceedings.

Historical Information

Context for Record Type: Business Records, both volumes and loose records are in some cases transferred to the Library of Virginia as components of court record transfers. These business records in some cases were simply stored in the local court building for safekeeping by business owners. In other cases, business records (particularly ledgers, account books, etc.) may have been filed in a court case as an exhibit. These business records exhibit appeared both in chancery causes and in judgments. These records serving as exhibits for business dissolution cases, debt suits, and contract disputes.

Locality History: Shenandoah County was named for the Shenandoah River, which passes through the county. Shenandoah is an Indian word meaning beautiful daughter of the stars. The county was named Dunmore when it was formed from Frederick County in 1772. The present name was adopted in 1778. Its area is 507 square miles, and the county seat is Woodstock.

Business Records, 1899-1949, is comprised of various records created by individuals and companies is pursuit of documenting business activities in and around Shenandoah County (Va.). Represented records largely consists of bound volumes such as ledgers, daybooks, cashbooks, minute books, correspondence, time book, payroll book, check register, account and letter books.

Series I: Shenandoah Valley Distilling Company Minute Book, 1934-1949

Historical Information: Shenandoah Valley Distilling Company was organized and headquartered in Timberville, Rockingham County, Virginia. The company began operations in July 1934. It manufactured, bought, sold, distributed, stored, warehoused, and exported brandy, whiskey, high wines, spirits, alcohol, and gin. The company distilled, redistilled, and rectifying high wines, spirits, and alcohol, and to compound and blend gins and whiskeys of all kinds. It also manufactured, bought, sold, dealt in, stored, warehoused, distributed, and exported fruits, grain, molasses, and all articles used in connection with the operation of a distillery.

Minute book, 1934-1949, of Shenandoah Valley Distilling Company that records the company's certificate of incorporation, by-laws, stock subscription agreement, and the meetings of the company's stockholders and board of directors from its inception. Series II: Simmons Lumber Company Business Records, 1903-1906

Historical Information: Simmons Lumber Company was a hardwood manufacturer that produced carriages, wagons, cart bent rims, spokes, and telloes. The company conducted business during the early twentieth century in Edinburg, Virginia.

Records, 1903-1906, of Simmons Lumber Company include a time book and payroll book, a ledger, and a check register.

Time book and payroll book, 1903-1906, records bi-weekly wages paid by Simmons Lumber Company to its employees. Information found in each entry includes name of employee, hours worked per day, wage rate per day, and total amount of wage.

Ledger, 1904-1906, records chronologically the payments made by Simmons Lumber Company such as freight expenses, wages, operating expenses, and supplies.

Historical Information: Triplett, Irvin and Wilkins was a wholesale dealer in tobacco, confections, salt, and feed and a retailer of farm supplies during the early twentieth century in Shenandoah County, Virginia. The company had previous hit businesses next hit in the towns of Woodstock and Edinburg. Volumes were used as exhibits in an unidentified suit heard in Shenandoah County Circuit Court.

The business records of Triplett, Irvin and Wilkins consist of two daybooks, five ledgers, ten cashbooks, and two invoice record books.

Two daybooks, 1918, 1920-1921, records transactions as they occurred on a daily basis from February-November 1918. Information found in each entry includes name of customer, items purchased, quantity of items purchased, form of payment, amount owed, and amount paid. Merchandise sold include seed, corn, salt, rock salt, hay, oil, livestock feed, coal, wire fence, fertilizer, and cement. Payments made by check, cash, credit, labor, and barter of items such as corn, bark, and harrow teeth. Page numbers found in daybooks correspond with page numbers found in Ledger, 1918-1921. Daybook, 1920-1921, also includes miscellaneous information dated 1936- previous hit 1938 next hit.

Ledger, 1918-1921, records the individual accounts of customers. Each account lists transactions in chronological order. Information found in each entry include date of transaction, amount owed, form of payment, and amount paid. Ledger does not list items purchased, rather it uses the general term "merchandise." The ledger also includes the company's controlling accounts such as expense account and phosphate account. Page numbers found in entries correspond with page numbers found in daybooks.

Ledger, 1926-1935, records in alphabetical order by surname the individual accounts of customers. Each account records name of customer and place of residence and lists transactions in chronological order. Information found in each entry include date of transaction, items purchased, form of payment, amount owed, and amount paid.

Ten cashbooks, 1916-1932, records in chronological order the company's receipts and disbursements. Information found in volume was divided into sections. The first section on the left side of the volume previous hit records next hit receipts from cash or check, the name of company or individual who wrote the check, amount received, and whether cash received was from sell of tobacco or sells made by warehouse. The right side of the volume records the cash paid by Triplett, Irvin, and Wilkins for expenses, name of expense, and cash paid out by the stores in Woodstock and Edinburg.

Ledger, 1934-1935, records in chronological order the daily transactions of Triplett, Irvin, and Wilkins. Information found in the ledger is divided into the following categories: a record of daily purchases, a record of daily sales, a record of daily cash receipts, bank deposits, and a record of cash payments. Entries include the names of individuals and companies with whom the company did business and expenses paid such as freight, wages, postage, gas, and ice.

Ledger, 1935-1938 records the individual accounts of customers. Each account lists name of customer and transactions in chronological order. Information found in each entry include date of transaction, items purchased, form of payment, amount owed, and amount paid. The volume also records the amount of money collected and paid by Triplett, Irvin, and Wilkins from 1936 to 1938. Information found in the entries includes date of transaction, total daily sales, money deposited in the bank, and expenses paid.

Two invoice record books, 1916-1921, 1926-1938 records the individual accounts of customers. Each account lists transactions in chronological order. Information found in each entry include date of invoice, invoice number of payment, amount owed, cash discount, amount of discount, and date paid. The volume includes additional miscellaneous information.

Series IV: Joseph Fravel Account and Letter Book and Account Book, 1899-1905

Historical Information: Joseph Fravel was a carpenter, furniture maker, and an owner of a carpentry supply company that conducted business in Shenandoah County during the early twentieth century. Both volumes were used as exhibits in an unidentified suit heard in Shenandoah County Circuit Court.

The Account and Letter Book and Account Book of Joseph Fravel consist of an account book and an account and letter book.

Account and letter book, 1899-1905, records the accounts of individual customers. Each account lists name of customer, residence of customer, date of transaction, services rendered, items sold, quantity and measurements of work done and items sold, cost per measurement such as foot or pound, freight cost and amount owed. Letters include correspondence with suppliers and customers. Volume is in poor condition due to missing spine.

Account book, 1904-1905, of an unidentified carpentry business that records the accounts of individual customers. Each account lists name of customer, residence of customer, date of transaction, services rendered, items sold, quantity and measurements of work done and items sold, cost per measurement such as foot or pound, and amount owed.
